Solar thermal energy
Solar collectors absorb sunlight when the sun shines. An innovative vacuum technology is used to heat the water that flows through the collectors to 85˚ Celsius. The water only reaches this temperature on sunny days, but we also have a solution for cloudy days in the winter.
Various parties believe that solar thermal energy is still at too early a stage in the Netherlands or that it is not even feasible. At Novar, we don’t believe in the impossible. We study new technologies and seek out innovations, and we’re not afraid of a challenge: we just fix it. The fact that the Dorkwerd solar thermal farm is now being built proves that mentality.
Novar is developing the largest solar thermal farm in the Netherlands in partnership with the property developer K3 and supplier TVP Solar. The 12-hectare solar thermal farm will soon supply 25% of all heat consumed by the 10.000 homes connected to the system. This technical and innovative solar project is being built at a former dredging depot in Dorkwerd near the city of Groningen. We will of course ensure that the solar thermal farm blends into the landscape and protects the local ecology.
Water tank as buffer
The water that has been heated by the sun is transferred through pipes to a large water tank, where we store heat. This storage tank acts as a buffer that allows homes to be heated in the evening and partially heated in the winter. We transfer the heat to the homes in two different ways: • directly from the solar collectors • from our buffer, the water tank
Heating grid
The heating grid is a network of pipes under the ground that we use to transport heat to homes and other buildings using hot water. This water is used to heat up homes and provide hot tap water.
Sustainable and innovative energy solution

Novar and K3 are jointly developing a solar thermal park at the Dorkwerd dredging depot on the north side of the city of Groningen.
NOVAR IN PRACTICE
Novar is developing the largest solar thermal farm in the Netherlands in partnership with the property developer K3 and supplier TVP Solar. The 12-hectare solar thermal farm will soon supply 25% of all heat consumed by the 10,000 homes connected to the system. We will of course ensure that the solar thermal farm blends into the landscape and protects the local ecology. Novar is committed to the transition away from natural gas. With this solar thermal project, the first in the Netherlands, we are showing that it is possible. Would you like to know more about this unique heating system?
